The story of Ugly Sweater Gala

Ugly Sweater Gala turned a party joke into prime-time television. Families glued pom-poms, tinsel and battery-powered lights onto thrift store sweaters, then strutted a runway while judges gasped. One year's winner featured a working music box and a tiny model train. Everyone watching at home immediately drove to the craft store.

Fun fact

One sweater had so many lights that it tripped the studio breaker and plunged the gala into darkness.
