Every evening the computer speakers dinged and bonked as pals signed on and off. Kids learned to recognize the sound from across the house. One ding could mean your best pal was home, or that your crush had finally signed on. Then came the hard part: waiting a casual minute before saying hi.
Some kids changed the sound to a cartoon boing, which confused every visitor who used their computer.
