The story of Sideways Smile Era
Before tiny pictures did the job, feelings were built from punctuation. A colon and a parenthesis meant happy. Add a semicolon and it was a wink. Kids invented elaborate faces with hats, noses and bowties, and spent study hall drafting a sideways cat that took up an entire line.
Some people insisted on the version with a nose dash, others refused, and the debate was never settled.
