Someone posted a picture of their fern with the caption, my plant when I order takeout again. The leaves drooped in a way that looked exactly like a sigh. Soon the plant was judging everyone: late homework, cereal for dinner, a fourth episode at midnight. Real houseplants everywhere suddenly seemed suspicious.

Fans knitted tiny sweaters for their own houseplants so the plants would look slightly less disappointed in them.
