The story of Test Pattern Breakfast
Somewhere around six in the morning, kids crept downstairs, poured a mixing bowl of cereal and turned the TV to the test pattern. Then they waited. The color bars hummed, the cereal got soggy and the house stayed quiet. When the first cartoon finally popped on, it felt like winning a race nobody else was running.
Turning the volume all the way down so parents would not wake up was the most important skill of the ritual.
