The story of Lucky Rat Tail

A rat tail was a commitment. You let one little strip grow for an entire school year while the rest got trimmed, then braided it and finished it with a plastic bead from the craft drawer. Some kids swore it brought luck on spelling tests. Moms everywhere waited for the day it finally got snipped.

The longest rat tails had to be tucked into shirts during gym so nobody could grab them in dodgeball.
