The story of Forty Pages of Code
The magazine promised a thrilling space game if you typed in forty pages of numbers and commands. Dad read the lines aloud while you typed. Sunday night you hit run, and a single square blinked once and froze. Somewhere around line nine hundred, a zero had become the letter O.
Most families saved their typed program to a cassette tape, which made a screechy sound like a robot gargling.
