The story of Operators Standing By
After midnight, every channel turned into a shopping show. A man sliced a tomato so thin you could read a newspaper through it, a woman cleaned a muddy sneaker with one squirt of foam, and an audience gasped at a sponge. Insomniac kids watched for hours, convinced they needed a tomato slicer, and woke up humming a phone number.
Most night owls could recite three toll-free numbers by heart but still forgot their own locker combination.
