The story of Prime-Time Spelling Bee
The Prime-Time Spelling Bee turned living rooms into stadiums. Kids with giant number placards spelled words nobody had ever heard, asking for definitions, origins and sentences. Families picked a favorite speller and shouted letters at the TV. When someone misspelled, the little bell rang and the whole house gasped like it was a championship game.
Kids at home tried to spell along, and most quit during round one after a word about a rare cheese.
