The story of Countdown Crystals
Countdown Crystals came in a tall foil pouch with a cartoon rocket on the front. You poured the purple crystals into cold water, then counted down out loud while it fizzed like a launch pad. Whole classrooms counted together at birthday parties. If the fizz stopped before one, you had to start over with a new glass.
Kids believed that if you counted backward fast enough the crystals would fizz higher, so most countdowns sounded like auctioneers.
